Can Bed Bugs infest Businesses?

8/29/2014

Bed Bugs can and will infest places of work. We have inspected and treated office buildings for bed bugs and having a good plan is in order. It is absolutely imperative that those who have any bed bug problem in their place of business seek immediate attention to remedy the problem. Not only can a bed bug problem grow rapidly throughout the building but having them spread to individual homes can create an even larger problem of liability and fast return of the bed bug problem. Employees will take time off to discover what the spots (bite marks) are on their bodies. Businesses need to eradicate first then set in motion a prevention plan that includes both treatments and education. One building we dealt with was a call center. They had a high turn over rate and workers traveled often. This presented a problem continual exposure of employees to bed bugs. A treatment schedule and plan was set in order to keep them from infesting the business. Recently the Pacific Investment Management Co. (PIMCO) Manhattan office building was shut down to take care of a serious bed bug problem. Great expense will now be their lot not including financial but also productivity loss. With $1.97 Trillion in assets under management a single second of mis-management could equal Millions. If you have found this post and you or business has a problem please reach out to us.

What are the top ten bed bug infested places to avoid? Should I be leery of any certain establishment and their potential bed bug issues? The answer is Yes to both. You should avoid and or be skeptical of certain types of places. The Travel Channel Made a list of the worst places for bed bugs and they are pretty accurate. Here they are in no particular order: Movie Theaters, Plains Trains and Buses, Public Libraries, Retail Stores, Daycares Schools and Colleges, Places of Worship, Laundry Facilities, Business Offices, Hospitals and Nursing Homes, Consignment Thrift shops and Yard Sales. To read the the full article click here.  To avoid acquiring bed bugs one must not be naive to their existence and prevalence bed bugs are any were people congregate. Higher traffic areas will be higher risk. Some of these places may not always be outright infested but are more of a drop off and hitch hike zone for bed bugs. Individuals who live in infested homes and spaces visit and some bugs get off and crawl onto a new host or into a bag to be taken home where they will inevitably infest. Avoid resting bags down on floors. In hotels always raise luggage on luggage stands. Inspect the room and mattress thoroughly. Insist on staying at hotels were occurrences have been low and the hotel has a systematic approach to prevent and eradicate bed bugs. One place to check is the bed bug registry online. Launder clothes and inspect luggage after hotel stays. If you have contracted bed bugs you will need the help of professionals. If you want to sleep tight again you will need a thorough and accurate inspection, proper game plan, and execution of bugs in a timely matter with a solid warranty. If you need a complimentary inspection please call us A.S.A.P.

CDC EPA Statements and Myths Page

We have heard many quotes from other companies and worst of all the news media speak for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or the Center For Disease Control (CDC) and say that Bed Bugs are of no concern to public health and that bed bugs have no detriment to individuals or society. This is of course is opposite of the EPA's verbiage. In Fact here is the link to a joint statement from the two stating concerns of this pest. Here is one quote from the post: "Bed bugs cause a variety of negative physical health, mental health and economic consequences. Many people have mild to severe allergic reaction to the bites with effects ranging from no reaction to a small bite mark to, in rare cases, anaphylaxis (severe, whole-body reaction) (2). These bites (Photo 2) can also lead to secondary infections of the skin such as impetigo, ecthyma, and lymphanigitis (3,4). Bed bugs may also affect the mental health of people living in infested homes. Reported effects include anxiety, insomnia and systemic reactions (1)." Though there is no known transmission of disease at this time many are concerned that at any time this pest could begin to cary disease. Bed Bug Myths are out there here is the Page from the EPA outlining myths.

Can Bed Bugs infest bed frames?

12/20/2013

Yes Bed Bugs could live in your bed frame!

If the bed frame is wooden and hollow or has many cracks this could be a very viable infestation place. At a recent inspection we looked all over the mattress, box spring, curtains, and carpet. No bugs were seen but upon a closer inspection of the bed frame we could see tiny baby nymph bed bugs crawling down the highway of a bed frame crack. There are other bed frames that have hollow structure these are also difficult to spot bugs in as well as treat. Forget any Product or chemical treatment for these bed frames Heat is will be the best method.

Do I have to through away my bed frame if it has bed bugs?

The short answer is most likely no. One of the only cases tossing the bed would be advisable is when it is hollow and infested and Heat is not used to eradicate otherwise if heat is used typically this will kill all the bugs in the frame.

Bed Bug Removal

For those experiencing the horror of a bed bugs the vexing question of "how do I get rid of these little B@$+@Ⓡ¿nbsp;(quote from customer)?" is the highest priority. Because there are many extermination types it is important to understand when you may need the higher forms of treatment and when you may get lucky with one of the lesser forms. The full range of treatments is listed on the left in order of effectiveness. If you can find success by Doing it yourself, go for it! The higher forms of treatment will be necessary if the DIY treatments failed. Note: it is very typical mistake for individuals to believe they can eliminate bed bugs on their own. In hopes of saving them time, money, and stress we recommend professional help upon discovery failure to do so will lead to headache, cost, and time. Please read all of the Bed Bug Info page to understand why bed bugs are considered super bugs and are extremely difficult to eradicate. In short Bed Bugs have developed a chemical resistance to most pesticides, their eggs have biological resistance, they have the bionic ability to inbreed and mate with family members, they are small and live deep with in cracks, and the females lay up to 5 eggs per day.

Bed Bug Treatment Types in Perspective
Each of the treatment types listed has pros and cons and varied cost levels.
DIY Do-It-Yourself bed bug treatments can range from zero dollars to a few hundred dollars all on a gamble that the bugs will be gone. We have known many people who have easily spent hundreds to thousands of dollars only to discover............ "their back"! Due to the above list of bed bug traits these do-it-yourself treatments may disrupt the bugs for a time but have little effect on them in the long term. Bugs are left alive which then mate and re-infest the home. We obviously hope you are lucky in your own treatment adventures.
Professional Treatments on the other hand move you into the upper echelon of treatment types designed to accommodate infestation levels, effectiveness, and cost. Do not get upset when professionals offer solutions that guarantee complete eradication this is their job. Chemical Treatments are typically only effective when the infestation is small, locational, and when affordability of treatment is a factor. Though success has occurred with this treatment type it is never guaranteed and the success rate is low. Family's will continue to be bit during the multi-visit multi-week treatment. Typical cost $95-$1,250 depending upon size/scope and repeat visits but typically on the lower half of $350-$700.
Spot Heat and Spot Freeze are virtually the same  in effectiveness with Freeze beating out spot heat in safety. The Cryonite freezing is a bit safer for belongings. Again this is more locational so if living bugs are walking around the home and left alive they will mate and re-infest. Hotels with bed bug monitors often hire these forms of treatment because problems are discovered early, having known areas, and are small in scope. Treatments range from $65-$500
Gas and Fumigation are typically used when a higher success rate is needed for eradication. Though the success rate is higher then spot heat/freeze and chemical this form of bed bug removal is also not guaranteed.   During this treatment Gas replaces oxygen in the home suffocating the bugs and eggs to death. This is typically a 2-3 day affair. And often costs the same or more than a heat treatment. Note: A misconception is that there is chemical used in the home it is a gas vapor that dissipates upon completion. The pros are you get to keep all your belongings with a high success rate. The cons are, it is not guaranteed, takes 2-3 days to complete and may cost more than heat. There is no residue left in the home with this treatment type. Ranging from $1,200-$8,000 for homes.
Heat Treatments on the entire area are very effective. The structure is safely brought to a high temperature. At a sustained level heat permeates every crack of the home and bugs and eggs are cooked in place. This method is guaranteed by professionals, is typically the same cost or slightly cheeper than a fumigation, it takes   one day to complete, all belongs may be kept, zero fumes, zero odor. Ranging from $650-$5,500
Heat and Gas are typically used when a severe infestation has occurred in a large treatable area. The cost and time for this treatment is high and is typically seen as overkill. since the bed bugs will be dead typically by one or the other method. Ranging from $1,400-$8,500

Bed Bugs Gone Before the Holidays

10/31/2013

Many families will have holiday guests and want their unwanted bloodsucking guests gone before they arrive. These Creepy pests showed up just in time for the Holidays here in Arizona. This video was taken of live bed bugs near Gilbert Arizona just outside of Chandler AZ. This video was taken just before Halloween. Many people will attempt to treat the Bed Bugs on their own with chemicals or gimmicks purchased online. For those who do their homework they know that this is not a do-it-yourself project and requires more than feeble attempts that can waste time and money on a gamble.

Bed Bugs are especially difficult to eradicate because they have eggs that are resistant to most chemicals, they are small, and they have the ability to inbreed (procreate with immediate family). These bugs and eggs are oftentimes living unscathed deep within a mattress or box spring or in a couch. Because of this it takes few eggs or bugs to keep the nest alive or to re-infest a home. Their hiding spots added to bionic egg protection give them chemical barriers and resistance. The Only guaranteed form of bed bug elimination is a Heat Treatment. "We Only saw Bed Bugs in One Room" Bed Bug Faulty Logic

10/11/2013

Notes: From last weeks Chandler and Scottsdale Bed Bug Heat Treatments

Call 480-428-4127Bed Bugs Treatment in Chandler AZ
A few phrases we hear all the time from customers are these: "The bed bugs are only in one room." "Only my roommate was bit so can't we just treat that bed?" or "I only get bit on my couch, do I have to throw this couch away?" "We just threw away all the beds we are still getting bit." "This is a brand new Bed." I'm sure by now you can see where this post might be going. All these phrases contain faulty logic about these pests. Look at the adjacent image.--> of a home recently treated in the Chandler Gilbert area. This is a white chair in an office 15 ft from the room where the bed bugs were last sited. Fifteen Feet Away! You can see the dead bed bugs laying on this chair. Bed Bugs were also found dead near family room couch 35' ft away and in the window sill of the master bedroom about 40' ft away. These dead bugs were found after the heat treatment was completed. For this home bed bugs were "only seen in one room". Bed Bugs were hidden from human view until the treatment was completed. This is why we only Give our 1yr warranty when the entire structure is treated. "My roommate is the only one bit". First of all this does not mean she was the only one bit (note previous post about bed bug bites) because some people have absolutely zero reaction to the bites so they could be getting bit and never have any marks or signs of bites. This phrase also does not make this roommate the guilty party for bringing the bed bugs home nor does it mean they are contained in one room. If you have been getting bit for more than a few days or weeks most likely there are bed bugs in other places of the house by now and it only takes a few to inbreed and rebuild a nest in the home. Next: New furniture. New Furniture is never a deterrent to bed bug infestation nor does it mean that it was not existent upon purchase.....though we are always grateful to hear of your new purchases :-)! Throwing away furniture has 2 problems one is that bugs are in other places than just the items you threw away and secondly the furniture containing the infestations are transferred providing free rides for bed bugs seeking new hosts. Many Goodwill Stores have been shut down due to these types of donations. In Conclusion if you have been bit or have seen bed bugs chances are they are not in one place. Secondly avoid donating furniture or leaving furniture to others (find a way to burn it) spare others the grief.  Be careful picking up furniture at donation centers like Goodwills or Salvation Army sites. Heat Treatments on the entire structure is the only guaranteed bed bug eradication method. Click Here to Contact Us or Click Here to see Why choosing the Bed Bug Division is Right for you.
